What is Kendo?

Are you interested in a fun activity that strengthens the mind and body? Kendo is your best bet. This is an adrenaline-pumping sport that has entertained players as well as fans since the 1950s. If that sounds exciting, this piece is for you.

Martial arts games, particularly Kendo, have encountered positive press over the past few years. This is probably because the sport features a perfect mix of discipline, coordination, and most importantly, self-control. And, as always, everyone is invited to the match!

The gear

Just like most martial arts games, players dress in unique outfits and protective gear. Also, if you stop to think about it for a second, the ring looks like a scene from a Samurai movie. But for a clearer picture, here is a list of gear used by participants:

  • A jacket
  • Baggy trousers (hakama).
  • An Amour
  • A special helmet with face, neck, and shoulder protectors
  • A cotton head towel
  • Breastplate for the chest
  • Waist armour
  • Gloves that protect the palm and wrists

If you think that is a little over the bar for a game played with bamboo swords, think again. Things can be downright messy without this type of gear. Besides, the idea is to recreate the ancient Samurai warrior image.

How it is played

For starters, people have to go through intensive and slow training to master all the basic moves required for a real match. Here, players learn anger management, controlling fear, eliminating doubt and anticipating anything from an opponent.

During a match, the idea is to prick the opponent on the head for maximum points and the chest area for a lower score. But it’s not as easy as it sounds; there is an awful lot of patience and skills needed to win Kendo matches. And that’s what makes it so interesting to the audience!
